Ho-on-ko - Special Musical Service at VBT Sunday, January 8, 2012 10:00 AM

As the most important Jodo Shinshu observance this is the date chosen to commemorate Shinran Shonin’s passing. The Hoonko Service in 2012 will be particularly significant, as it marks the 750th year since the passing of Shinran. At our Mother Temple, Nishi Hongwanji in Kyoto, special musical services have been conducted since April 2011 leading up to their Hoonko Service in January 2012.

Jodo Shinshu Temples and Sangha members all over the world will hold special services in their own ways, to show gratitude for Shinran Shonin and his devotion to the Nembutsu Teaching.

Vancouver Buddhist Temple’s Hoonko Weekend will begin with a free public lecture on Friday, January 6, at 7:30pm. The lecture, titled “Buddhism and War”, will be given by Rev. Peter Inokoji (Sacramento, Cal.). On Sunday, January 8, theVancouver Buddhist Temple will hold a very special Hoonko Service starting at 10:00am for Dharma School students, followed by Dharma Talks in Japanese and English, and ending with our own musical service.
